About Flo

The Netherlands is known for its famous cycling culture. For years cities like Amsterdam and Utrecht are listed as one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. Together with the team at Springlab we wondered: what can we do to make cycling even better en more enjoyable?

We started off by conducting a large-scale research among cyclists in Utrecht. We asked them about their cycling experiences and what could be done to improve it. We soon discovered that most cyclists are quite frustrated by the many traffic lights. A well known challenge: at busy roads you’ll have to wait at every turn because of those traffic lights. And so we came up with a solution: Flo.

Flo is your personal speed advisor to catch the green light more often. It strongly reduces the amount of time that cyclists have to wait in front of traffic lights. Flo detects your speed and then tells you what to do to catch the green light at the upcoming intersection. There are four different symbols that Flo can show to you. Every symbol represents a specific advise to help you catch the green light. The hare tells you to speed up, slow down if you see the tortoise, keep your pace with the thumbs up, and the cow unfortunately tells you there is no chance you’ll get the green light.

Research conducted by the University of Utrecht has shown that cyclists catch the green light more often because of Flo and that they experience less stress and frustration. Read the full study here.
